14 December 2009Iron Range Resources Board Meeting

The Iron Range Resources Board on Monday, December 14, 2009, approved a commissioner’s request reallocating a $250,000 fiscal year 2010 endowment match to Ironworld Development Corporation (IDC) that will provide a loan to the IDC to pay its outstanding claims, cover Iron Range Resources costs of securing the Minnesota Discovery Center and paying for an accounting examination and business planning activities.

The Minnesota Discovery Center closed November 20, 2009, after the IDC notified Iron Range Resources of a financial deficit at the center. The IDC, a nonprofit, manages and operates Minnesota Discovery Center, a history center in Chisholm, under a sublease/management agreement with Iron Range Resources.

Since closure, Iron Range Resources has secured the site and critical systems required to protect buildings and preserve historical collections.

A decision on a definitive operational plan is planned by March 31, 2010.

The board also approved:

  • A $350,000 Public Works Infrastructure grant to the City of Silver Bay for infrastructure and site work on a 16-unit assisted living/memory care facility that would employ about 10 full time equivalent workers.
  • A $90,000 Public Works Infrastructure grant to Crystal Bay Township toward construction of a septic system for an intermodal center in Finland, Minnesota. The center will serve as a trailhead for the Superior Hiking Trail, Moose Run ATV trail and North Shore snowmobile trail.
  • A $50,000 Public Works Infrastructure grant to the City of Iron Junction to help extend sewer lines to 17 residents.
  • A $215,000 matching grant to the Range Cities Health Care Collaborative to identify and pursue methods to collaboratively enhance services and create efficiencies.
  • A $1,725,971 Taconite Economic Development Fund rebate to United States Steel - Keetac.

In addition to commissioner’s requests, the board approved:

  • An April 1, 2010 date for renegotiating payment of $6 million in loans and $180,000 in interest by Essar Steel Minnesota.
  • A $200,000 allocation to cover operations at the Iron Range Research Center, a library and archival facility at Minnesota Discovery Center.
  • An Iron Range Resources Board resolution supporting the PolyMet Mining Corporation base and precious metals mining project near Hoyt Lakes.
  • Redirecting a $130,000 grant to the City of Grand Marais to a business park development from a housing project.
