Mesabi Nugget’s $260 million iron nugget production facility near Hoyt Lakes continues to be on target to begin production in the third quarter of 2009, according to company officials.

Construction on a water treatment building at the site began in February where (left to right) Operations Manager Steve Rutherford, Mining Manager Tom Lutes, Vice President Dave Bednarz and Engineering Manager Jeff Hansen posed for a photograph.

Good weather in February helped advance construction of Mesabi Nugget’s rotary hearth furnace and an iron ore concentrate processing facility.

Built on a portion of the former LTV Steel Mining Company, Mesabi Nugget will become the world’s first commercial iron nugget plant. The facility is expected to produce about 500,000 metric tons of iron nuggets per year.

The project is providing work for about 500 construction workers and will employ about 65 permanent workers.
