7 January 2009Snowmobiling in northeastern Minnesota
Snowmobiling in northeastern Minnesota is the best it’s been in years.
As of Tuesday, January 5, snow depths across northeastern Minnesota region ranged from about 14 inches to 30 inches.
Because of the early, heavy snowfall, most snowmobile trails in northeastern Minnesota are rated in very good to excellent condition, according to trail condition reports at www.wildnorth.org.
“We’ve got some really good trails and a ton of snow,” said Bob Dethloff, trail administrator for the Laurentian Trail. “The trails are in excellent shape. Just about everything is groomed.”
Northeastern Minnesota has over 2,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, dozens of high-quality dining, lodging facilities and service facilities, and easy access to trails.
Snowmobiling is one of northeastern Minnesota’s most important tourism industries.
Statewide, snowmobiling creates 8,000 jobs paying wages and salaries of $245 million and generates $56 million in state and local tax revenues and $200 million in tourism dollars.
