Sandy Layman is commissioner of Iron Range Resources, a state agency located in Eveleth, Minnesota, and charged with developing the resources of the state's mining region. She has led the agency since her appointment to the cabinet-level post by Governor Pawlenty in early 2003.

Layman brings a strong, twenty year background in organizational management, community leadership and economic development to the agency. Under her watch, Iron Range Resources has served as a catalyst for significant private sector investment in the region by supporting a number of large, innovative projects at the development stage. During Layman's tenure, the agency has undertaken several internal capacity-building initiatives as well, including a partnership with the Northeast Higher Education District to address workforce issues and a successful transition of Ironworld Discovery Center to nonprofit management.

In addition to her work at the agency, Layman is actively involved in rural community development through service on the boards of the Center for Rural Policy and Development and the University of Minnesota Duluth's Natural Resources Research Institute, and recently retired from twelve years of service as a trustee of the Blandin Foundation.

Layman holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in organizational management and communications from Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota and a Master of Business Administration from the University of St. Thomas. She and her husband live in Cohasset and have two adult children.
